Often called the Golden City and Guru ki Nagri, Amritsar is the spiritual heart of Sikhism and a living tapestry of history, faith, bazaars and food—just 28 km from the Indo-Pak border.

Etymology & Mythology
“Amritsar” means “Pool of Nectar,” named after the Amrit Sarovar around Sri Harmandir Sahib. Earlier called Ramdaspur (founded by Guru Ram Das). Linked to Valmiki Ashram (Ram Tirath) in the Ramayana tradition.
History (very short)
Foundations: Guru Arjan completed the Sarovar & Harmandir Sahib. Sikh Empire: Misls era → Ranjit Singh unified Punjab, fortified the city & gilded the sanctum.
