History
Gurudwara Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji (also called Shaheedan Sahib) marks the cremation site of Baba Deep Singh Ji and fellow Singhs who attained martyrdom in 1757 while marching to liberate Sri Harimandir Sahib. When news spread that Afghan forces under Taimur Shah and Jahan Khan had desecrated the sanctum and attempted to fill its sacred sarovar, Baba Deep Singh Ji — then advanced in age — vowed to reach the shrine, lifting his famed heavy khanda and gathering the Khalsa.
On the city outskirts near Gohalvad, a fierce battle ensued. In the clash with Jahan Khan’s forces, Baba Ji was grievously wounded and beheaded in combat; lore records that he rose, holding his head in his left hand, continuing to fight with the khanda in his right, and pressed on towards Amritsar. Reaching the precincts, he offered his head at the parkarma of Harimandir Sahib. The antim sanskar (cremation) for Baba Ji and many Shaheed Singhs was performed at this very site.
A living memorial to courage and seva, the shrine embodies the Sikh vow to uphold the sanctity of the Guru’s house against tyranny — a story retold daily in ardas and local tradition.
Shaheedan Sahib Today
Setting: Located just outside historic Chattiwind Gate on the Amritsar–Tarn Taran Road, the complex commemorates the shaheedi asthaan with a sanctum for darshan, portraiture of Baba Deep Singh Ji, and spaces for kirtan and ardas.
Associations: The narrative here is intertwined with other related sites of Baba Ji’s last march and battle (e.g., Lakeer Sahib where he drew the line, and Tahla Sahib near Chabba, linked to the beheading episode). Within the core city, the memorial focus at Shaheedan Sahib keeps the story central for pilgrims tracing the route.
What to Expect
Offer prayers at the sanctum, read the brief site narrative panels, and spend time in quiet reflection. Many pilgrims pair this visit with a round of nearby historical gurudwaras within 1–2 km (Manji Sahib, Bibeksar, Ramsar, Akal Takht, Baba Atal).
Open: Generally open round the clock for darshan; specific halls may follow local schedules. Etiquette: Head covered; remove footwear; photography respectfully and as permitted.
